The Single-Use Plastic Ban: A Guide for UK Food Businesses
Since October 2023, businesses in England have been banned from supplying certain single-use plastic items to the public. Scotland and Wales introduced similar rules. If you serve food to take away, it is worth checking that your packaging complies.
What is banned in England?
- Single-use plastic plates, trays and bowls (with some exceptions for pre-packaged food)
- Single-use plastic cutlery and balloon sticks
- Expanded and extruded polystyrene food and drink containers, including cups
Plastic stirrers, straws and cotton buds were already restricted. Always check the latest official GOV.UK guidance for exemptions and details.
What should I use instead?
- Kraft paper bowls and containers for salads, rice and noodles
- Bagasse clamshells and bowls in place of polystyrene boxes
- Birchwood cutlery in place of plastic forks and knives
- Kraft soup containers in place of polystyrene tubs
Making the switch
Start by listing every item you hand to customers, then replace banned items first. Order a single case of each alternative to test with your menu before buying in volume.
